Santorini

Close your eyes.  Think of the color blue.  Blue so blue that it vibrates.  Blue so intense it almost hurts.  Blue so saturated with color it can't get any bluer.  Now add a splash of cool white and some dramatic volcanic islands.  Hey!  You must be in Santorini.

Okay, now picture a volcano.  Nice symmetrical mountain, right?  Now blow the top of it off and fill the middle (the caldera) with blue ocean, but don't fill it all the way to the top...you should have some of the top still sticking out of the sea.  Those tops (there are five of them) are the "islands" that make up Santorini.  And it's gorgeous...at least until the next volcano explodes.  And one of those little "islands" IS an active volcano.  It's always something, right?!

This is a little rock island...it's white because that's volcanic ash covering it.

I believe this is the active one.

Just exactly what you expect to see here.  Lovely.

Found my beach.

So, yeah, that's Judas - you know, Christ's betrayer.  At midnight, the people shoot at him.  I'm not kidding.

Since it was Easter, we were afraid stuff might not be open.  We were happily surprised.  And lunch was delicious!

It's an Eastern Orthodox church and bell tower (campanile).  They're everywhere.  And so pretty.

This is along the walkway of shops and restaurants.  They're everywhere, too.

Our ship in the bay.

When people first started living on this island, they dug their homes into the side of the cliffs.  They added a door and a couple of windows to the two or three rooms they'd dug, and voila!  The house's bathrooms and kitchen were outside.  Inside was cool in the summer and warm in the winter.  It was fairly maintenance free and easily defended against pirates.

We had a great day at the beach and roaming around town.  The local brewery, Santorini Brewing Company, was closed because of the holiday, but we found some of their beer at another bar and spent the afternoon guzzling the local stuff.  Happy Easter!

Tomorrow - Rhodes.
